By RUSSELL SMITH
At 6'5" tall and 315lbs. I am not your typical snowshoer. Over the last 7 years I have been trying AND selling several different brands and models of snowshoes. Including, Tubbs, Atlas, MSR and Crescent Moon. The largest were the Crescent Moon 36 inch shoes, they were OK, but the teardrop design doesn't help with any flotation.
The BIGGEST problem that I had with ALL of these shoes was when I got tired, my feet would revert to a TOES OUT stance, which eventually led to me stepping on a shoe then falling down. I purchased the MSR lightning ascent last year and while I did like them alot, I still had the same problems, though the traction was far better then any other brand I used. Then this year MSR came out with the axis AND the 5 inch tails, well I had to try them(Sunnys Sports was the FIRST Place on-line that I could get both, and cheaper then anywhere else, even now). WHAT A GREAT DEAL, I have since been on trails here in RMNP and ARNA and broken my own trails in both areas, I can walk for 4-5 hours and still be comfortable. Another thing, when you look at my trail, it is straight! The bindings are secure, I was not sure about the single heel strap and the big foot strap, but it does work. I have since removed the mid-foot strap. The large strap NEEDS to be fitted PRIOR to going into the field (like the manual says) the locking system is different, and not easy to do one handed, the other straps are the same as in past models easy on and easy off.
As with all lightning models, they have a monster grip on just about any surface and the ascent bar is easy to pull up and put down.
FINALLY a great shoe and tail combo for someone my size and my normal toes out walking style - the best shoe I have ever owned.

By r_m_high
I prefer traveling by skis in the backcountry, but I needed a pair of light, rugged snowshoes for climbs in Alaska with non-skiing partners. The Axis shoes have worked really well in tough backcountry conditions. I tested them thoroughly on climbs of various 13ers and 14ers in Colorado, and they got the job done for me on Mt. Fairweather in Alaska.
Once you get used to the buckle system, they are really quite easy to adjust, even in the field. I need to size them for either my regular mountaineering boots or my beefier double boots, depending on conditions, and it's easy and reasonably quick to adjust the buckle accordingly. However, I do feel that a ratchet on the main buckles would have been a better design, making them easier to put on, cinch up, and hold securely -- regardless of the boot -- which is why I give these shoes four stars instead of five.
What I like about the Lightning Axis:
- easy to strap on (once you get the hang of it), even with mitts
- very easy to remove, even with mitts, and in freezing and wet conditions
- excellent traction, even while traversing on slopes. The integrated crampons and serrated edges grip hard snow really well.
- the versatile 25" size works well on packed snow and trails, while breaking trail in fresh powder, and with a pack
- adjusting the main toe strap is easy to do, even in the field, once you understand how it works (though normally you can set it and forget it)
- the climbing bar is effective and easy to engage and disengage
- they are rugged, but light
What I would change:
- although the strap system is fairly straightforward, it still takes a bit more effort than I would like to strap in tightly and securely. You definitely need to use the middle strap for a snug fit and secure fitting. I believe a ratcheting buckle system would be even more secure and would make the shoes easier and quicker to put on. It would also be easier to switch between my two very different size boots.
Overall, the MSR Lightning Axis is a well-designed shoe that works great in the backcountry.

By T. Varela
I was shopping for a set of snowshoes and narrowed it down to either the MSR Lightning Ascent or the Lightning Axis. I decided on the Axis mostly because of the new quick release bindings. The bindings are awesome, no more futzing with complicated fasteners! Once the initial adjustments are made, it takes about one minute or so per shoe to attach or remove these. Absolutely the best.
They are lightweight and appear to be made from excellent quality materials. Time will tell. To break these in I did a five mile walk over varying terrain including some moderately steep and icy conditions, the traction is absolutely first rate. The most comfortable and natural feeling snowshoes I've ever used.
Highly recommended.
