I bought these at a local camping/hiking store because a sales person recommended them. I needed them to help stabilize myself while hiking on moderate terrain where there's plenty of ice. Worked fine on the first hike, except that my friend was wearing them and the heel plate kept sliding off to the back of his shoes while descending a slope. However, his shoe size is smaller than what this traction device was fitted for, so that's not a problem with the product. On the second outing, as I was using this traction device on the way down a slope one of the chains connecting the heel plate snapped causing the plate to come out from under the shoe to the side. I fixed it up with 550 paracord bypassing the chain and it was enough to hold it together for the way down. I thought that perhaps I happened to get a lemon, and although was planning to exchange it through warranty, had another hike coming up and decided to give the XTR another shot (broken chain was still fixed up with paracord). On that hike, once again on the way down more chains snapped. It was 3 at first (one on the same shoe and 2 on the other), and as I was patching them up with paracord as I went (no other safe way to walk on ice) 2 more chains broke. I barely made it down having absolutely no faith in the traction device (upon inspection at home I discovered that the spikes dulled considerably, and one of them was broken right off).
It seemed that when I'm on flat terrain that they work quite well, but as soon as there is a slope, or uneven surface and your foot starts sliding on snow and the spikes catch on something if your whole weight is on that foot (which is often the case) the chains just can't take the force. Also when moving down a slope, if your heel plate catches and the toe plate does not (which is also often the case), the heel plate can slide right off your heel since it is not directly connected to the toe plate. Although the manufacturer suggests these to be rated for trail hiking, they are NOT durable enough to take the weight of your body when your foot starts sliding (I used them with size 10.5W Vasque hiking boots, I weigh about 180lb - around 200lb with gear).
In my experience the Yaktrax XTR Extreme might do well while cleaning snow off your driveway, or making your way to work on icy streets, but if you're looking for hiking traction aid on uneven terrain - look elsewhere.

Got these for Christmas.
First time out, and one of the chains broke 2/3 of the way up Mt. Monadnock...Called Yaktrax and they told me they were aware of the issue. They told me that they weren't even making the model anymore because of it, and they were hoping to rectify it with next years design.
They told me to return them through Amazon and if had an issue, to get back to them and they would make it right. They're not running from the problem, and it sounds like they're taking their medicine, but the fact is that this product is outright bad.

I did extensive testing of this product, along with similar competing products, when I was a buyer for a large outdoor retailer. Even though these were last to market and the folks at Yaktrax had plenty of time to learn from their competitors, I was shocked to find how poorly these performed. The spikes are small and sit well inboard of the sides of the boot, reducing stability significantly. The traction device migrated all over the boot, even when different boots and different sizes were used. After only a few uses, the grommets began to detach as well. Consider a Kahtoola Microspike, or even better, a Hillsound Trail Crampon instead.
