Good grip and flotation but LOUD, LOUD, LOUD
By Carol Shepherd
I have used these twice since purchasing them. The first time I tested them was in about six inches of powder, without the tail extender. Flotation would have been better with the tail but was not bad. Due to the snow, the shoes were noiseless. The second time I used them was on a well-traveled snowshoe trail with a packed surface over about two feet of snow, on varied terrain. Flotation was good and the shoes gripped extremely well, over obstacles, on 45% ascents and descents, and even traversing snow-packed wooden stair steps. Unfortunately, these shoes are LOUD - unbelievably loud. They clackety-clack against the bottom of your boot with every step. We guessed that the sound was mostly due to the ascenders flopping when not in use (looks like it's possible to remove those, but why would you want to, on varied terrain?) Another model of MSR's worn by another person in our party, without the ascenders, also made a clacking noise with every step. My review would be 5 stars, except for the completely unacceptable noise. The silence of the woods is a big part of the beauty. I'll be returning these shoes as the noise with every step drove me absolutely bonkers.

Pretty good
By Dave LaRue
I've got several styles of wood shoes and 3 pair of Atlas in different sizes. I spend a lot of time on snowshoes mostly following my hounds in the steep mountains, far from any trail. I go where they go which might be through ledges, beaver bogs, blowdowns, ect. I don't wear snowshoes on packed trails, or unless the snow's deep.
The first season I had the MSR's they became my favorite when the conditions were right for a small to medium snowshoe. They could replace my two smallest pairs of Atlas because of the tail. I didn't like the rubber straps, but they worked better than I thought they would, and they stayed on all day for me. I like them a little bit better than the Atlas when climbing a steep grade. Where they shine is going across a steep grade. If I reviewed them after the first season it would have been 5 stars.
The second season things went bad. The rubber straps had some age on them, and I broke one nearly every time out. Parts started falling off. Some in the woods, and some vibrating around in the back of my pickup. MSR sells a repair kit and the rubber straps. You'll need them if you put them through rugged use. Then I broke the metal part of the binding. I didn't have as many miles on them as some of my Atlas that never gave me a problem.
Negatives: They're minor, but I need spare parts. They're noiser than any other shoe I've ever had. They throw a rooster tail when used without the tail.
The positives far outweigh the negatives. The MSR's are very affordable. They're great in rough terrain. The main body is indestructable. They're versatile with the option of the tail. Good choice if you bring kids. They're fast to get on or off.
They'll probably stand up to easier use than I put them through. They're easy to fix. I'll fix mine or buy a new pair and have them for parts

Good Shoe - But if you are a bigger person, you will need the tails
By Robert C. Bickle
I am 6'4", 220 pounds. I purchased these shoes for winter hiking with my family and winter backpacking with my son and the Boy Scouts. I also purchased a pair of tails becasue I was concerned that, with a pack, the shoes would not sufficiently float. My concern was justified. Without the tails, I could use the shoes on compacted snow and trails, but the tails were needed for the soft areas. Frankly, I felt that the tails for the higher end models, such as the Tours, should have included the tails becasue the heel lift feature and the binding upgrade does not seem to warrant the additional cost alone.
I did like the durability of these shoes and the ice grips are without compare. In fact, I think it is in the uneven terrain department that these shoes excel, especially if here is ice. The solid platform also is tough and after a winter's use, showed little wear.
The bindings need to be adjusted before you go out and heel strap adjustment and proper clipping is critical if you do not want to leave your shoe behind half way up the trail.
Overall I am satisfied and purchased the next level down for my wife. Since she is less than 1/2 my weight, the lack of tails were not an issue for her and she enjoined wandering the woods with the confidence that the aggressive grip provides.
